If anyone should know how to deal with rain, it’s an Irishman. A sense of humor goes a long way, too. Enter Glen Hansard. Performing during the day’s hardest rainfall, he can’t help but smile. The singer-songwriter aptly breaks into a line from the Doors’ “Riders on the Storm” and encourages everyone to put away their umbrellas, stare up at the sky and simply let the water smack them in the face. To demonstrate, Hansard spontaneously climbs off the stage and stands underneath the equivalent of a spigot where rain is descending from the stage tarp. He soaks it up, loosens his shirt to let more in and looks at the crowd as if to say, “See, it’s great!” Hansard is on a roll. His indefatigable spirit, clever wit and lust-for-life passion translate to his music and ace band. A three-piece horn section abets his quartet, and together, they make geographical borders and stylistic boundaries disappear. On striking covers of Marvin Gaye’s “Baby Don’t Do It” and Aretha Franklin’s “Respect,” the musicians evoke the soulful folk of fellow Irishman Van Morrison during his “Moondance” and “Astral Weeks” era. Old-time Americana and brassy Dixieland flavors also crop up, Hansard handling it all in stride, the progressions both natural and organic. Trombones blurt. Mandolins twang. Pianos ring. Violins saw. Hansard sings in a sweet, mellifluous voice, his deliveries emissaries of hope and sincerity. Traditional Irish lullabies and chanteys enchant, but so too does his electrified rock, which Hansard pushes to soaring heights until he’s literally red in the face.
