ftb_releaseposterThe Frames released For The Birds on 2 April 2001 on their own record label, Plateau Records. On 30 March 2011 the band will be celebrating FTB’s 10th anniversary with a sold out performance at Vicar Street. In honor of the big 10, we’ve set up a special page for anything we can find about the album release such as reviews and interviews as well as these wonderful videos from Donal Scannell of the day the band got their finished copies of the album and performed in Simon’s Cafe in Dublin.

2001 RTE Ten radio interview – This is a very cool audio piece we are excited to have! Glen talks to Caroline Hennessy about each individual track on For The Birds. Thanks to Brian for saving it all these years and sending it to us.

Video (we love!):
The day The Frames got finished copies of For The Birds (part one)
incl Donal’s comments:
it was thursday march twenty ninth 2001 and the frames had just received finished copies of ‘for the birds’ – their first independently released album. although no-one could fully appreciate the scale of what was to happen in the years to come, everyone could sense that this was an auspicious day. the frames were a huge live band, one of ireland’s biggest at the time and finally they were on the path to releasing albums their way, without record label meddling. to mark the arrival and release of their celery smelling baby they decided to play a free gig in simon’s cafe on georges st. in dublin. simon gracefully cleared away all the furniture for a gig which would be the first of five the frames played in dublin that weekend to give ‘for the birds’ the entry into the world it deserved. setting up in simon’s took a bit longer than planned so glen decided to head outside with his guitar to entertain the troops lest they get bored and feck off home. this material is part of a dvd that never was which we’re now sticking up on the web. 2001: a frames odyssey we’re calling it for now!

The day The Frames got finished copies of For The Birds (part two):
so it’s the day the frames got finished copies of ‘for the birds’ and they play this amazing gig in simon’s cafe on south great georges st. in dublin. apart from heralding the arrival of the frames first self-released album this gig was also the first public appearance of the frames own diy merchandise – the white masks – initially made and designed by siobhan begley and inspired in part by glen’s fixation with mexican death masks they made us to give away free with copies of the album bought at road records – just around the corner from simon’s. glen gave away the whole supply of masks to the simon’s audience and they’ve been a feature of frames gigs since. it’s fitting that the most popular piece of frames merch ever can only be home made and was never for sale. this excerpt from the gig features ‘headlong’ from ‘for the birds’ and someday more songs will go up here and elsewhere.
